Alton Towers Scarefest 2021 Mazes Ranked Best to Worst

Alton Towers Scarefest 2021 mazes remain unchanged for the 2021 season but are they improved from last year? Let’s find out!

Trick O Treat Town is the only new addition to the 2021 Scarefest line-up which delivers in every department and is an incredible addition to the Scarefest line-up.

It’s fun, family-friendly and you get some sweeties for your troubles as you wander around this spooky little town.

Let’s dive right on into the Alton Towers scare mazes, shall we?

1. Altonville Mine Tours

Altonville Mine Tours

It was the strongest maze of the 2020 season and once again it’s the strongest maze this time around.

The claustrophobic tunnels mixed with the hilbilly accents and insanely detailed theming make Altonville Mine Tours the strongest Scarefest maze this season.

Solid acting mixed with pinpoint detail set dressing amplified the jump scares we received.

Nothing even came close to Altonville Mine Tours this Scarefest season but with the maze being introduced in 2016 it may sadly be coming to the end of its Alton Towers Halloween domination.

2. Darkest Depths

Darkest Depths Alton Towers

Darkest Depths has been amped up for the 2021 season.

Or so that’s what it said on the website as the age rating of the maze had been increased.

Upon our walkthrough there was absolutely no difference between this version and last years version other than the placement of the pirate bar in the opening pre-show tavern.

There were no scenes different whatsoever, maybe some stronger dialogue (no swearing) compared to last year but certainly nothing that warranted an upgrade in age rating.

The whole maze hadn’t been touched and with a distinct lack of actors, we were just walking through a very detailed sinking ship maze.

Sadly a disappointment considering how strong this was the year previous.

3. The Attic

The Attic Alton Towers

The Attic was another maze that suffered from a severe lack of actors as we encountered around 5 the entire maze after our introductory pre-show.

There was only two of us doing the entire maze and we received absolutely zero scares as the place looked deserted.

I was debating whether to do the Attraction Source maze tour where you could tour the sets with a group but after walking through this entire maze already somewhat abandoned I felt as though I’d saved my money and got the same experience.

The Attic has always been a lovingly detailed maze but never a scary one and I’d be very happy to see this replaced in the future.

4. Freak Show: Toxic Junkyard

Toxic Junkyard Alton Towers

The weakest maze of the 2020 line-up returned post-pandemic with an indoor section. Great for the weather but sadly that’s where it ended as once again Toxic Junkyard wasn’t just the worst maze at Alton Towers but the worst maze I’ve done this 2021 scare season.

We encountered 4 actors in the entire maze, we did it in the daytime which is absolutely a big no-no as you can see the actors a mile off and can even see them running to the next location to jump out at you.

Why this maze even opens in the day is beyond me but at nighttime, it isn’t any better either, just a few more colourful lights and some fog.

Yes, it’s a much better experience but it’s more comedy than horror and it just feels out of place at Scarefest with blaring loud music and chainsaws that serve no purpose to the already disjointed story.

I can’t stress how poor this maze was.

If you’ve not done many scare experiences before then I’d absolutely start off with this maze as your first, it’s tame enough to introduce you to the concept of scare mazes without scaring you at all.

What was your favourite out of the Alton Towers Scarefest 2021 mazes?
