A new job listing on the Merlin Careers website hints that Alton Towers Virtual Queuing may be re-introduced for the 2021 season.
The job description under the main responsibilities section reads as follows:
“Being the point of contact for any guest queries or feedback regarding Virtual queuing or the Resort Box Office operation.” and “Ensure all rental devices attributed to Virtual queuing are well maintained, fully operational, signed in and out daily with any damages/concerns reported to the Commercial Sales manager.”
This process would involve guests booking a ride slot on the Alton Towers Resort App or similar device and this allows you to explore the park until it’s your time to board.
By the sounds of it there will also be devices handed out to guests that will alert you when it’s your time to ride.
Whilst I like the sound of virtual queuing I don’t think it would make a great deal of sense with the standard queues.
This could potentially be the new fast track implementation as so many people complained about the prices of the one-shots last year.
Paying £6 for just one ride or even more if it was Galactica, Wicker Man or The Smiler just seemed ridiculous.
Maybe this new virtual queuing system will help to keep the fast track queues down whilst at the same time providing that more premium experience that you’d come to expect when paying for the old Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum fast passes.
Parks such as Disney used virtual queuing systems with their Fastpasses so it would make sense that Alton Towers addresses the issues that plagued last years fast pass option with this handy new alternative.
Back in the early 2000s the park ran a virtual queue system for Nemesis, Air, Black Hole, The Flume and other rides.
The service was free of charge but was replaced by the Fastrack system hence me thinking why this particular virtual queuing service will be catered to fast pass holders only.
Crossed fingers, as I’ve certainly missed fast passes that’s for sure.

More details to follow.
