Who doesn’t love a good Woodie?! The UK has a whole host of classic coasters and here are our very best wooden roller coasters that you MUST ride!
Here are the Lift Hills and Thrills 5 MUST-RIDE wooden coasters in the United Kingdom.
Wicker Man at Alton Towers
Fusing wood and fire together the Wicker Man is the newest coaster on this list.
Replacing The Flume at Alton Towers this beautiful looking ride opened in March 2018 and is one of the most intense and enjoyable wooden roller coasters in the country, if not the world.
Featuring an immersive pre-show you board your train, ascend the lift hill and the chaos begins. You pass through a Wicker Man statue that bursts into flames when you fly through it.
Wicker Man is relentless fun from start to finish no matter where you sit.
Built by Great Coasters International Wicker Man quickly became a fan favorite at the park. Costing £16M to make the coaster can hold 24 riders per train and reaches a top speed of 70.2 km/h.
Riding the coaster at night around Scarefest is when Wicker Man really comes into its own as you fly through the smoke and flames in ultimate thrill-seeking fashion.
Grand National at Blackpool Pleasure Beach
Constructed by Charles Paige back in 1935 Grand National is only one of three surviving Mobius Loop roller coasters in the world!
The ride is laid out to mimic a horse race. Rides pass through famous turns before they reach the winning post.
Two trains go head to head in this wooden racing showdown!
With a height of 62m, this ride was named in our roughest roller coasters list but that’s not always a bad thing.
Grand National is such a classic roller coaster that it was listed as a Grade II listed building on April 19th 2017!
In March 2019 the ride broke the world record for the most naked people on a roller coaster. A title it still holds to this day. I hope they cleaned the seats after!
Megafobia at Oakwood Theme Park
A ride I had to include in this list to appease its fanbase.
After a legendary first drop that is deserving of this very list, it does become quite tame after that.
Located at Oakwood Theme Park in Wales this Custom Coasters International ride was built in 1996 and was the first white-knuckle ride at the park.
It was the latest wooden roller coaster to be built in the UK. That was until Wicker Man was built.
Megafobia held the title for the best wooden roller coaster in the country up until 2018 when Wicker Man was built.
The ride has an 85-foot tall lift hill which is fun to climb. I can’t stress enough just how good that first drop really is!
When visiting Oakwood for the first time last year we made sure to ride it in every single seat row we could.
It’s well worth a ride so you can make up your own minds but once Wicker Man arrived at Alton Towers we haven’t looked back since.
Roller Coaster at Great Yarmouth Pleasure Beach
Built in 1932 roller coaster stands as the only ride of its kind in the UK. A ride that still requires a brakeman to operate it.
A brakeman sits at the back of the train to control the speed. He does this because there are no brakes on the track.
You’re putting your entire life in the hands of the man at the back of the train.
Roller Coaster is the second tallest and fastest wooden roller coaster in the UK and is also a Grade II listed building.
Big Dipper at Blackpool Pleasure Beach
The oldest coaster on our list is Big Dipper at Blackpool Pleasure Beach.
Built in 1923 by John Miller and then extended in 1936 Big Dipper is another Grade II listed superstar.
A ride that packs a punch (literally) every single time!
Another ride that made our roughest coasters list but what do you expect, it’s nearly 100 years old!
