How DeadBeat at Thorpe Park Was Created

Dead Beat at Thorpe Park is the brand new scare maze addition at Fright Nights this year and it was certainly a great new addition to the already impressive Fright Nights lineup.

Fright Nights blew me away this year with all the mazes in the line-up improved and expanded upon.

Trailers receiving new scenes that revitalised what I felt was a rather tired maze up until this year. Survival Games with more actors than ever before, Stitches perfecting their amazing debut back in 2023 and this brand new addition Dead Beat bringing a very unique scare maze experience to the line-up.

Dead Beat plays out more of an experience than a Scare Maze as you traverse a nightclub where the music is quite literally making people dance until their deaths. Whilst the storyline isn’t entirely clear whilst walking through the maze you get the gist as you walk through a nightclub and see these dancers transform before your very eyes.

Whilst not a jump scare-focused maze the experience was immersed and there were some great use of actor reveals including a ceiling reveal that was very impressive indeed. Having a multi-level maze certainly gives you that towering feeling and gives more depth to a standard walkthrough maze experience.

Unlocked Vision Entertainment worked with Thorpe Park to deliver Dead Beat for the Halloween season and the company delivered the project under extraordinary time constraints with only a small number of days allocated for design with a seven-week schedule for construction and installation.

The rapid development timeline presented a significant challenge, with Unlocked Vision Entertainment stepping up to deliver a world-class experience in record time.

The design team was given just 10 days to conceptualise and finalise the attraction’s layout, story, and effects, followed by a seven-week build period to bring the vision to life.

The build of “Deadbeat” demanded thorough planning, creativity and seamless execution to work alongside tight deadlines and operational challenges. The attraction incorporates a variety of fear-inducing elements, including a pumping soundtrack, air effects, dramatic lighting, smoke, and expert rigging for thrilling actor stunts, all of which add to the immersive and heart-pounding experience.

Entertainment Project Manager Steph Ricketts had the following to say about the maze:

“At Thorpe Park, we have been excited to unveil our newest scare attraction, Deadbeat, which has made its debut at Fright Nights 2024! This soul-sucking journey into a dark underground rave features thrills and jump scares at every turn, thanks to our incredible partnership with Unlocked Vision Entertainment.

Over nearly a year of collaboration on this project, the team at Unlocked Vision has been instrumental in bringing this experience to life. From the initial ideation phase to producing the final creation, their expertise has shaped every aspect of Deadbeat. We engaged in countless ideation sessions, design workshops, and discussions, all focused on refining our vision to ensure that every detail delivers maximum impact for our guests.

Navigating the logistics of working to a brief, managing timeframes, and collaborating alongside one of our major rides housed in the same building presented unique challenges, but the Unlocked Vision team turned these obstacles into opportunities. Their innovative designs, technical knowledge, and creative eye have helped craft stunning set pieces and immersive experience elements that truly capture the essence of suspense and fear.

With innovative gags and carefully designed environments, Deadbeat creates an atmosphere that guests have loved. The feedback has been fantastic, and it is quickly becoming a fan favourite.”
