Planning permission has been sent off to Lichfield District Council with proposals to build a Drayton Manor Drive-In Cinema.
The planning application for the cinema is only a temporary addition to the theme park.
The cinema screen will be located on the Leyfield car park and has been added to help increase visitors to the park.
Many drive-in cinemas soared in popularity over the pandemic and Drayton Manor hopes to use this to aid with social distancing and bringing more footfall to the park.
With a 4D cinema already built in the park showing a special version of Ice Age could we be seeing more Universal titles headed to the big outdoors screen?
The screen is going to be 200 square metres in size and toilets will also be installed alongside it.
There is a lot of work going on at Drayton Manor in regards to painting up current ride offerings and the very strong chance of Splash Canyon making a return.
Work on Splash Canyon has been continuing over the winter period with a whole new mechanical upgrade and all new painting / theming spotted on site.
With the ride not featuring in the 2021 line-up just yet this would indicate a later launch or if rumours persist could mean a 2022 launch with a twist.
There are murmurs flying around that the ride will undergo a heavy retheme which could mean the whole 2021 season will see the ride upgraded but at the same time a 2021 opening has also been rumoured to be on the cards.
Thankfully, we don’t have to wait too long to find out the answer.
Personally, I wouldn’t mind them waiting a year and really theming the ride up to be something special, such rides as Kali River Rapids at Disney or even Popeye Raging Rapids at Universal are two prime examples of rapids rides done right.
I only wish UK park owners had that same ambition with their ride offerings.
But for the time being, roll on the Drayton Manor Drive-In Cinema!
