Hickory’s Smokehouse Gresty Green Review – Lip Smackingly Good!

Hickorys Gresty Green

Cast your minds back to before the pandemic and there was one special smokehouse in the UK that stood head and shoulders amongst the rest and that’s Hickory’s. Here’s my Hickory’s Smokehouse Gresty Green review.

It’s not often I get excited about ‘American-Style’ diners opening up here in the UK.

They’re usually ever so disappointing.

But when I came across news that an American smokehouse was coming to town, I had to check it out!

Hickory’s, founded in Chester by Neil McDonnell in 2010 is renown for its focus on food quality, customer service and authenticity.

Extensive research has gone into American BBQ and smokehouse foods and transporting guests to the good ol USA with atmosphere and flavour is what Hickory’s is all about.

Based in Gresty Green (one of many UK locations), Hickory’s has only been open since the end of 2018 and in that time I’ve already been close to 30 times and I just can’t get enough!

Hickory’s Gresty Green Interior

Hickory's Gresty Green

Even as you approach Hickory’s you can tell this isn’t any ordinary restaurant.

With its old-western feel and ‘southern-style’ interior, you are instantly transported to the good-ol USA.

Walking through the wooden interior you will see an open kitchen and chef’s bar in addition to fire pits roaring as each piece of steak, rib and more is being slow-cooked to absolute perfection.

Our waiter guided us to our table, brought us a large bottle of water and some free popcorn to nibble on which is standard for every Hickory’s meal experience.

Hickory's Cinema Gresty Green

The chilled bar surrounded with TV screens would make a great atmosphere for sports nights.

WWE pay-per-view events and don’t even get me started on the Super Bowl!

With all you can eat wings, beer and the game on TV there would be no place better to watch the big game!

If that wasn’t all there is even a movie theatre with films playing throughout the day.

Kids and adults alike can chill out and watch a great range of movies on offer.

With an outdoor play area including a table-tennis table, I can imagine Hickory’s is the go-to place to be in summer.

Hickory’s Gresty Green Menu

From American style breakfast waffles to famous hot wings. In addition to giant desserts to match the giant steaks, it’s safe to say you won’t be spoiled for choice.

Hickory's Homicide Wings
Homicide Wings Pack a Punch!

I’ve tried the majority of starters on the menu now and whilst the nachos weren’t what you call ‘authentic’ in any way shape or form every other dish hasn’t disappointed.

At the time of this review I tried out the Homicide Hot Wings and they certainly have quite the kick!

So much flavour and heat at the same time and it’s well worth trying if you think you’re brave enough.

Hickory's Platter For One

For mains, I was feeling brave. I ordered myself a smokehouse platter for one.

This huge meal consists of Memphis style ribs, Smoked pork, cheese and jalapeno sausage, BBQ pulled pork and beans, 8hr smoked beef brisket, Kansas style smoked ribs and Texas brisket.

It took me a good 30-minutes but I polished it off eventually and my god was it delicious.

Please note that as of 2020 (long after this review) the menu has been considerably shortened and the homicide wings are sadly no longer available. The portion size of the platter for one certainly doesn’t look like this anymore either, it has been considerably downgraded with the price remaining the same.

Overall

Hickory's Gresty Green Review

Friendly staff members, authentic atmosphere and incredible food you’d be a fool not to check out Hickory’s.

This is hands down the best place I’ve been to in the UK to get authentic American smokehouse food.

For those who just can’t wait until Hickory’s is open once again the smokehouse provide a Hickories at Home delivery service bringing the smokehouse right to your door.
