LEGOLAND Mythica Review: A Very Hit and Miss Expansion

LEGO Mythica

It was my first trip to LEGOLAND Windsor in around 20 years as I went to check out LEGOLAND Mythica and the UK’s first flying theatre.

Consisting of three brand new attractions the brand new LEGO Mythica land is where LEGO creatures come to life.

A realm where epic adventures and powerful guardians protect us as we roam a land of mysterious creatures.

Well, that’s what the marketing material says anyways.

Upon my first trip to Mythica my thoughts were a little more realistic than the wing and prayer land description.

Flight of the Sky Lion

Flight of the Sky Lion LEGOLAND Windsor

The flagship attraction in LEGOLAND Mythica is the UK’s first flying theatre as you climb aboard Maximus the Sky Lion and soar on his wings through Mythica.

With a beautiful station building including one of the most beautiful LEGO creations within the park you head inside and take your seat.

What follows was something a little underwhelming (for me) in terms of the package being delivered.

I can only compare the experience to a bowling alley or arcade VR machine where you sit on it, pay £1 and shake and rock back and forth to a video in front of you.

You could see the screen and all the technology at work so there was absolutely no immersion to speak of and a confusing story aside it all seemed a bit redundant.

This majestic station building, so grand and detailed housing no more than a very mediocre simulator.

Water and wind effects combined well when Maximus was flying over water but for the most part the movement just didn’t seem elegant or immersive.

I felt detached from the experience and this is certainly a part where my age comes into play.

As a young child I’d be mesmerised by what I was witnessing and I’d be small enough to not notice or pay attention to the operations of the ride.

I’d be front and centre and totally sold on what the attraction was all about.

Flight of the Sky Lion was a miss for me but I know for damn sure I’m not the target demographic here.

Children would absolutely love this and that’s the whole point.

So whilst Flight of the Sky Lion felt like a bowling alley simulator we queued over 2 hours for, to a kid it’s a magical escape to another realm and for that, it’ll be a hit.

I wish the station building had more theming and elements to it though as the second you step inside the cattle pen made for quite an uncomfortable 2 hour wait, especially in the hot weather.

Being cooked up in a tin shed for 2 hours wasn’t the more pleasant experience that’s for sure.

Fire and Ice Freefall

These two rebranded drop towers are very similar to that of Windmill Towers at Paultons Park.

Very simple in their design and great for kids providing a very short drop and a fun little cycle.

Hydra’s Challenge

Another re-themed ride for the area and whilst it looked great fun the first time it’s safe to say the re-ride appeal gets old real quick.

Jaw-dropping twists and turns (as per the marketing material) is overselling it slightly.

Circling around and around like a merry-go-round on water is certainly more fitting for this particular ride.

Great fun to ride in the hot weather though that’s for sure!

LEGOLAND Mythica Overall

The one highlight for me of LEGOLAND Mythica were the beautiful LEGO creatures that have been created and dotted around the expansion.

Walking through there just seemed to be a lack of atmosphere or immersion in the fantasy they’re trying to create.

Everything feels rather basic and rehashed and whilst the beautiful entry portal builds up anticipation that feeling quickly dissipates moments after walking through.

More interactive characters, more expansive theming and just something a little extra feels missing.

Kids won’t care and will enjoy it regardless but for me, it just needed that little bit more.

  1. Flight of the sky lion ride – made me feel ill (motion sickness & migraine) couldn’t wait to get out , 1st minute was great but then I had to look to the side the feeling of ill & shaky kicked in although I’m middle aged I think anyone that gets motion sickness should avoid this ride coz once your in the seat you have to stick it out till the end, I have experienced this before ie cine2000 tent years ago where you felt you was on a roller coaster ride that was projected onto the screen , anyway v,good for anyone that can cope with it lol

  2. Same here, made me feel really ill with sickness and migraine. Never again. It’s taken 24 hours to recover
