Megafobia the UK’s Best Wooden Coaster? I Think Not

Megafobia

Located at Oakwood Theme Park is Megafobia a Custom Coasters International wooden coaster. Built in 1996 the ride was the first white-knuckle ride to be added to the park.

For many years (and even recently) the ride has been rated as the best wooden coaster in the country and I for one cannot wrap my head around why that is.

Parental Advisory – Bad language from myself on the first drop. Whoops

With its twisted layout Megafobia takes you straight up a lift hill to its peak 85ft height. An incredible first drop brings you back down to earth but after that it’s well, dull. It certainly has the ‘Big One’ effect to it where everything after the first drop is rather boring.

Whilst visually it looks amazing the ride experience is poor. I have more fun on the Grand National and even Big Dipper at Blackpool Pleasure Beach. The reason for this is because they’re so wobbly and jolty that it spices things up a bit. Megafobia is just a one trick pony not worth of the UK’s greatest wooden coaster title anymore.

Wicker Man

Wicker Man Ride

Whilst certainly not a structure that hits the same heights as Megaphobia, Wicker Man at Alton Towers certainly wipes the floor with it in every other department. Theming, ride experience, intensity. Wicker Man blows Megaphobia out of the water. For people to even compare the two now just seems a little redundant. For it’s age Megaphobia is a great coaster and was worthy of the title back then. But now, not a chance.

Move over Megaphobia. You’ve been well and truly beaten.
