The UK’s Top 10 Tallest Roller Coasters – How Many Have You Been On?

Being absolutely petrified of heights I made it my mission to ride every single one of the UK’s Top 10 Tallest Roller Coasters and I only have one ride remaining!

Another website much bigger than our own recently posted a similar list but had some of the rides in the wrong order and some of the height facts wrong so we’ve corrected that for your below.

Here’s the OFFICIAL Top 10 tallest roller coasters in the UK.

1. The Big One at Blackpool Pleasure Beach

Opening in 1994 on May 28th manufactured by Arrow Dynamics, The Big One at the time was the tallest roller coaster in the world, a title that it held until July 1996.

Still to this day the tallest roller coaster in the UK the views from the top give you a foreboding sense of landing in the sea and still has one of the best first drops of any coaster in the country.

Standing at 213ft tall it’s hard to see anything beating it for quite some time!

2. Stealth at Thorpe Park

New Ride at Thorpe Park

Built-in 2006 this Intamin launch coaster a ride that takes you from 0-80mph in under 2 seconds, this thrill ride is the fastest accelerating coaster in the country and as you crest that 205.1ft top hat the views of the park (for a very brief second) are extraordinary.

3. The Odyssey at Fantasy Island

Odyssey Fantasy Island

Opening in 2002 this Vekoma is the tallest SLC in the world standing at a staggering 167 feet as your legs dangle and shake towards the top of the lift hill giving you breathtaking views over Skegness and one of the scariest first drops on any SLC i’ve ever experienced and it’s certainly one of the roughest Vekoma’s in the country.

Speaking of rough coasters, here’s our Top 10 Roughest Coasters in the UK article.

4. Millennium at Fantasy Island

Millennium Fantasy Island

Built to originally celebrate the millennium the ride was actually opened a little prematurely in 1999.

This custom layout Vekoma is one of the smoothest UK Vekoma’s by a long country mile especially compared to its neighbour Odyssey at the park and reaching heights of 150ft it certainly makes Fantasy Island one to visit containing not one but two of the tallest roller coasters in the country.

5. The Swarm at Thorpe Park

The Swarm Thorpe Park

Opening in 2012 The Swarm is the UK’s only B&M winged coaster and the lift hill takes riders to it’s peak 127 ft before contorting the track into a twisted drop and is absolutely insane especially sat on the far right of the coaster.

With near miss elements and very comfy vest restraints I do have quite the soft spot for this apoalyptic themed coaster.

6. Shockwave

Drayton Manor 2020 season passes

Opening in 1994 with rumours of it being dismantled every single year since the Intamin coaster Shockwave is Europe’s only stand-up rollercoaster and it’s a stomach churning experience that’s for sure.

As you’re standing up all the way to the top of that 120ft structure it’s time to evaluate your life decisions and away you go.

If you missed our video yesterday please do check it out as it looks as though Shockwave is getting a nice new paint job for the 2021 season meaning it’s certainly not going anywhere, anytime soon!

7. Kumali at Flamingo Land

Kumali Flamingo Land

Another smooth Vekoma in the list as your feet dangle to dizzing heights of 117.8ft as you experience up to 4.7g around the custom layout track.

Themed after a lion this coaster certainly roars around every inversion and is ridiculously good fun.

8. Wipeout at Pleasurewood Hills

Wipeout PleasureWoodHills

Once named The Missle at American Adventure the ride was relocated to Pleasurewood Hills and renamed The Wipeout.

Opening in 2007 this Vekoma boomerang coaster reaches a height of 116.5ft before you roll backwards through the cobra roll and vertical loop that you’ve just been through moments before.

Still to this day the last coaster on this Top 10 list that I have yet to experience.

9. Speed: No Limits at Oakwood Theme Park

Speed No Limits

Easily my favourite Gerstlaurer Eurofighter in the country this is the tallest, fastest and steepest roller coaster in Wales.

Opening in 2006 you climb up a vertical lift hill to 114.8ft before plumming down a 97-degree first drop.

Speed: No Limits is the UK’s tallest and argubly scariest Eurofighter coaster beating the likes of Saw the Ride at Thorpe Park and Rage at Adventure Island.

10. Infusion at Blackpool Pleasure Beach

Similar to Fantasy Island, Blackpool Pleasure Beach doesn’t just have the UK’s tallest coaster but it has the 10th tallest coaster in the country as well.

This rough and ready Vekoma SLC throws you into its tumbledryer layout and after a scary leg dangling 109.3 foot lift hill which is the most relaxing part of the ride you are in for quite the head bashing experience.

Don’t let the relaxing water features as you approach the ride fool you, this is a tsunami experience that feels as though you’ve got Poseiden’s folk firm implanted up your..

You get my point.

So there you have it, that is the UK’s Top 10 Tallest Roller Coasters.

How many have you been on?
