Fear Island Mazes Ranked Best to Worst

Fear Island at Fantasy Island

Fear Island at Fantasy Island in 2022 consists of 4 scare mazes all designed by the incredible team over at Atmosfear but which one is the best at this year’s event? We find out as we list these Fear Island mazes ranked best to worst.

Scream Asylum

Scream Asylum Fear Island Mazes

Commit yourself into Blackwood Peak where insanity meets science in a disturbing medical nightmare…  Inside, the crazed patients will welcome you into their unethical world of madness and delusion.  Failing to accept treatment will result in a truly terrifying life sentence inside Scream Asylum.  You’d be MAD to miss it!

Diving straight into the strongest adult maze in the 2022 line-up and funnily enough, it’s located inside an old McDonalds building, you can still see the drive-thru windows upon exiting the maze!

Scream Asylum was the most intense and detailed maze of the Fear Island line-up with some beautiful theming throughout and some good jump scares. Different asylum-themed rooms present themselves to you as you become an urban explorer armed only with a glow stick as your only source of light.

Introduced to the story by an actor at the beginning sets the scene for the journey you’re about to embark on as you explore this abandoned (or so they thought) asylum before all hell breaks loose.

Many of the Fear Island mazes lacked actors upon our visit but the mazes were dead all day with absolutely no queue at any given time, it was a very quiet day in the park and this could be a reason why the maze lacked actors.

Guided by glow stick light I explored the beautiful theming of this maze and what they lacked in actors the ones that were inside the maze certainly went above and beyond to provide that extra scare experience.

Spook Hunters

Spook Hunters

Take part in a haphazard ghost hunt led by the zany Doctor Highgate inside Gallowgate Castle!  Designed with younger guests in mind Spook Hunters is a family adventure with just a hint of friendly fright!

Yes, a children’s maze has just hit our second spot in our rankings list and it really should be a joint first as Spooky Hunters absolutely nailed it!

Rebranded from last year’s The Haunting 2: Under Investigation comes a brand new story and a ridiculously fun actor-led experience for all the family.

The scenes are the most detailed out of all the mazes and whilst I’m not usually a big fan of theatrical-type mazes where you stand and listen to a story these were interactive and quite wonderful.

It’s fun, it’s heavily themed and there’s a finale to this maze, unlike the others. A grand finale which worked perfectly and was equal parts funny and jumpy.

Fun ghosts are projected throughout various parts of the maze and it’s just a joy to walk through as you encounter various friendly faces within this king’s castle.

Villa Voodoo

Villa Voodoo

Venture through the misty bayou and into the murderous mansion of serial killer Delphine La Laurie, in an extended version of The House of Voodoo with all-new chambers of torment.  Can you evade the clutches of the otherworldly inhabitants and escape Villa Voodoo?

Whilst the jump scares were quite limited in this particular maze the theming was astounding, something I’ve come to expect from Atmosfear creations.

Various terrain lies under your feet from leaves to stones to a draw bridge at one point and the biggest jump scare of them all came in the form of an air cannon voodoo mask that made me jump an absolute mile.

The costumes are great and once again the story is introduced wonderfully at the beginning of the maze but it just needs those extra actors inside to create that jumpy experience with many corners of the maze where you’d expect actors to be remaining empty.

We did come at the weekend but as mentioned previously, the park was very quiet with walk-ons all day for both the rides and mazes.

Blood Bunker

Blood Bunker Fear Island Mazes

Enter a labyrinth of vaults hidden deep beneath the ground as you take part in a deadly game of ‘Cat and Mouse’.  Serial killer Edward Slice and his murderous band of cohorts are ready to ‘play’, and YOU are their prey inside Blood Bunker…

Whilst Blood Bunker isn’t a bad maze it’s certainly the weakest in terms of visuals and overall experience. A twist in the storyline introduction and a nice lift sequence sets the scene but in a maze of wooden crates (for the most part), it just felt a little cheap compared to the other mazes.

Atmosfear has scaled almost everything back in terms of theming and aside from a little set here and there it was quite a poor maze visually.

The actors certainly gave it their best and a nice section of the maze has you trapped in a cage which was a nice touch but overall the maze theming and overall lack of jump scares and actors within the maze left Blood Bunker drained.
