After only opening their 2026 expansion to turn Kynren into a site that now hosts a whole variety daytime shows more plans have been submitted to help it become more of a year-round tourist destination.
When visiting the site only a few weeks ago we mentioned the fact that all of the stages created at Kynren were all open-air theatres and for a climate like ours this wouldn’t be sustainable during the bad weather months.
Up steps Kynren today to submit plans to expand into 11Arches Park with three new performance venues that will be inspired by different periods of history in addition to transport improvements.
The three performance venues would include an indoor medieval castle theatre and an outdoor Roman amphitheatre.
Named The Lone Centurion the Roman-era spectacle will explore the power, conflict and legacy of Roman Britain.
Plans are also in the works for an epic maritime adventure celebrating Britain’s seafaring heritage and other legendary stories such as Excalibur and Robin Hood are also being explored with new dining experiences, attractions and more reasons to return.
For me, having three indoor spaces would be the better option to give the attraction three solid indoor shows for people to shelter in when the weather isn’t on our side but it’s certainly exciting to see the ambition of this attraction that will grow year after year.
To support the increase in visitors a new road is being proposed linking the A688 directly to the attractions, allowing traffic to bypass Bishop Auckland town centre. This would also include two visitor car parks and a new pedestrian footbridge over the River Wear.
