An escape from the outside world and the perfect go-to hotel once this craziness is over, here’s our Chester Grosvenor Hotel review.
I have been long planning a trip to Chester for quite some time now and the perfect opportunity arose most recently.
We packed our bags and spontaneously jumped on a train towards Chester to stay at the iconic Chester Grosvenor Hotel.
The only 5-Star hotel in Chester smack bang in the city centre steeped in luxury, class and a proud heritage.
The existing building dates back to 1865 and the hotel is renown for its understated elegance, sublime comfort, and a relaxed ambience.
I seem to be getting into a habit of fine experiences lately.
Last weekend I paid yet another visit to the ever incredible Jumeirah Carlton Tower hotel in Knightsbridge.
A hotel heavily featured on this blog as one of my all-time favourites in the UK.
With that said, when we approached the Grosvenor hotel I was expecting similar treatment.

It was coming up to 8 pm and there wasn’t anyone to greet us whatsoever.
No one to collect our bags, no one to welcome us. This was a real shame.
It had me saying:
“Where was our friendly-faced man in a top hat when we arrived?!”
Whilst it’s not a big deal as we only had hand luggage, it’s the smallest touches like this that should be implemented all day and night at a 5-star establishment.
Sadly unlike the Jumeirah Carlton Tower, this particular service was absent the particular evening we visited.
However, the next day when we were leaving the hotel there was a wonderful gentleman in a top hat helping people with their bags and opening doors for them and I couldn’t help but wonder where he was last night when we arrived!
Upon entering the hotel it’s clear to see why The Chester Grosvenor has such a reputation.

Such extravagance and such beauty in the heart of Chester.
The hotel has to be in the most perfect city center location with everything you could ever need a mere few paces away.
Bars, restaurants, jewellery shops, clothes shops, a shopping center, you name it!
A very friendly lady at reception helped us through a breezy check-in.
We were given our room key and off we went. Ascending up the elevator onto our floor the halls of the hotel reminded me of some very old school horror films and I even had 1408 film flashbacks.
The hotel feels somewhat modern whilst at the same time, there’s a sense of historic preservation within the artwork and certain pieces of decor.
The Deluxe Room at The Chester Grosvenor

For the first time in a long while I hadn’t booked a suite this particular weekend (unlike the Spa Suite last weekend) I had booked a deluxe room and deluxe was an understatement.
Larger than the standard rooms, the deluxe room was beautifully furnished with both classic and contemporary features.
The bed was big enough to sleep 3 or 4 people and we had a little walk-in entrance, marble bathroom with shower and bath.

What I did find annoying however was that there was a very small bottle of wine on our welcoming tray.
Nowhere on any of these items was there any indication that these would be chargeable items.
They weren’t in the mini-bar section they were sitting on our welcoming tray with a little card that said ‘With Compliments’ written on.
The next day I found out that these items were indeed part of the mini-bar and we were charged as such.
I thought this was very sneaky.
Especially for the price paid for the hotel, I would expect the very small (and uninspiring) bottle of wine that was provided would be complimentary.
I guessed wrong.

The room came complete with TV/DVD Player but you had to ring down to reception to request certain movies.
Yes, those kind.
One can only imagine the conversations that one must experience on reception when say one lonely traveller orders ‘Naughty Housewives Delight‘ to be delivered to his room.
I can understand why DVD’s aren’t kept in the rooms but ordering them via a phone may put some people off watching those kinda films altogether.

Elemis products filled the bathroom and after sinking into the rather comfy bed we decided not to leave.
We stayed in, ordered room service and a bottle of wine and dined like king and queen for the evening.
Room service pricing was slightly over the top but when the food arrived it looked Michelin star quality, it really did.
My 10oz ribeye steak melted in my mouth and the homemade onion rings were an absolute delight.
The tomato accompaniment was fresh and the Pinot Noir we had to go with the food was equally wonderful.

Overall
I hope you have enjoyed our Chester Grosvenor hotel review as much as we enjoyed out nights stay.
The rooms are a luxury on a higher level.
Every room has this quintessential British charm to them that is endearing.
I instantly feel transported into Chester’s version of Downton Abbey if all for a brief second.
Aside from not being greeted at the door and the mini-bar deception the Grosvenor Hotel is a wonderful experience.
Sadly, there wasn’t enough time to fully explore the restaurants, spa and other amenities that the Chester Grosvenor provide.
But, I’m sure I’ll pay another visit in the future and check out some of their finer suites and intimate hotel experiences.
Overall it was a great night with some great company!
