Danse Macabre Efteling Review: A Hauntingly Beautiful Ride

Danse Macabre Abbey

Danse Macabre at Efteling is one of the world’s most immersive and atmospheric dark rides and finally in 2026, a whole two years after its initial opening back in 2024 I finally got to check it out firsthand.

From the moment you enter the new Huyverwoud forest area there’s a real sense of tension and haunting ambience that sets the tone of the area with the ruined abbey standing head and shoulders above the rest of the architecture that the land consists of.

Joseph Pemberton

The haunting soundtrack of Danse Macabre lingers in the air just building up the grand finale that lies in store for guests who enter the ride.

Combining a ride system with a composition of music is a genius idea but it’s not just a ride in the dark with music it is a complete amalgamation between the guests, the music and the ride system.

Danse Macabre Interior

The orchestra delivers its chilling rendition of the song led by a deathly composer and the ride shies away from jump scares and just allows you to ride the waves of the music as it crashes and falls.

Danse Macabre is more than just a ride, it’s an experience and a journey. It’s not built to be a thrill ride but more of a showcase of just how far the boundaries of immersion can be pushed.

Danse Macabre SIgn

For someone like myself who has a short attention span I get into the habit of riding a ride once and then never again, it takes something truly special for me to go back on it for a second ride whether that’s a certain feeling, a certain element or simply because I enjoyed it.

With Danse Macabre I rode it four times during the same visit and went back for more the next day!

It’s very re-rideable in the same vain that listening to your favourite song is re-listenable. It just works and works well as the world’s first technology (manufactured by Intamin) combines with the scale of the theming that Efteling pride themselves upon.

There’s not really any negatives I can pick apart when it comes to Danse Macabre with it feeling like such a finely tuned instrument in every department. If I’m being greedy I’d suggest that it could go on for longer but wanting more is hardly a negative!

Head Stones Efteling

Efteling remains one of the most immersive theme parks in the world and Danse Macabre just simply reinforces that and takes guests straight into the heart of an immersive ride with a hauntingly beautiful soundtrack.

Truly one of the most unique and wonderful dark rides in the world where ambience and immersion take precedence over cheap thrills.
